Charter Organization

Sea Scout Ship 5111 is proud to have the Columbia Yacht Club as our charter organization.

The Columbia Yacht Club traces its origins to 1891. Columbia members constructed a barge topped by a small shed that served as the original Clubship. From this humble beginning, Columbia Yacht Club's tradition of a floating Clubship was born.

The barge was replaced in 1927 by the 'Pere Marquette', an iron and wood steamship that served until 1936. She was replaced by the 'Florida' a decommissioned lake steamer that served the Club through 1982.

The current Clubship is the 'Abegweit', a 372 foot Canadian icebreaker and rail/auto ferry, built in 1946. At the time of her commissioning in 1947, she was the most powerful icebreaker in the world. She was owned and operated by the Canadian National Railways. The 'Abegweit' sailed from Pictou, Nova Scotia to Chicago on April 5th - 14th, 1983. Forty-five Columbia Yacht Club Members, fifteen Kings Point Merchant Marine and six Canadian Seamen who formerly worked on the vessel, served as her crew.
